Powerful future for plants - 19th June 2020

Scientists in Israel successfully used plants to produce energy.

They claim this landmark achievement, producing hydrogen from plants, could eventually lead to using vegetation to generate electricity.

The discovery was made by using microscopic algae in research at Tel Aviv University in Israel. It is set to define a new era in agriculture, according to the university’s Renewable Energy Laboratory chief, Iflach Yacoby.

It raises the possibility of plants serving a wider range of our daily needs beyond food, including in energy, chemicals, heavy industry.

However, in spite of this cutting edge research, many expect a 20 year wait for the findings to result in practical benefits.
