Clear winners in UK election - 16th December 2019

On Friday 13th December, Boris Johnson retained power in his first UK General Election as Conservative Party leader, winning a solid majority.

Boris Johnson: "As the nation hands us this historic mandate, we must rise to the challenge and the level of expectations."

Speaking at his constituency count, leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn reflected on a disastrous night for the opposition.

Jeremy Corbyn: "This is obviously a very disappointing night for the Labour Party with the result that we've got.

Boris Johnson was driven to Buckingham Palace for the customary audience with the Queen, who, as head of state, asked him to form a new government. Mr Johnson then returned to the Prime Minister's official residence at Number 10 Downing Street to begin work, where his first priority will be to execute his Brexit plan.

Boris Johnson: "And with this mandate and this majority we will at last be able to do what?"

Audience: "Get Brexit done."
