Mannequins pose for police in street - B1+

Dummy police are the newest recruits to law enforcement in Bangalore, India. The mannequins are dressed as traffic officers complete with hats, white shirts and fluorescent vests with the police badge.

The dummy police officers are placed at major intersections. It's hoped they'll encourage drivers to follow traffic rules. But why the need for mannequins?

Well, there are over 44,000 junctions in Bangalore. But only 450 have proper traffic lights. The rest are managed by the police or not managed at all because there are not enough police officers.

In 2019 there were over 50,000 cases of reckless driving and over 57,000 cases of drink driving.

But will these model officers help solve the problem? They've received a mixed reaction from locals.

Man 1: "It's general human mentality when you see a policeman- you have the fear in your heart, 'Oh, I am doing something wrong, I will not do it.' "

Man 2: "We do not, do not follow rules even if they [police] are real. Then, how could it work when they are not even moving and running after us?"
