New homes in England to have car chargers - B1

Help for electric cars - 20th December 2021

England is making a new law to help electric cars. This will create up to 145,000 new charging points every year.

Electric car charging points will have to be part of new homes. They’ll also be required in new supermarkets, offices and factories.

The UK is slowly switching to electric cars. They help reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which will slow the speed of global warming. In 2019, cars and taxis produced 16 percent of all the UK’s greenhouse gases.

At the moment, there are just 25,000 charging points in Britain. But sales of electric cars are increasing, so more charging points are needed.

About 10 percent of cars sold in the UK in 2020 were electric. That's a huge increase from 2018, when it was only 2.5 percent. And by 2030, all new cars must be electric.

The government hopes that the new laws will change car charging. It will be like putting petrol or diesel in a car today.

Mike Childs is from the environmental group Friends of the Earth. He’s pleased with the government's plan. He said that electric cars were important for a zero-carbon future.
