Young racer starts new F1 engine - 16th March 2026
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix saw the debut of Britain's youngest ever Formula 1 driver, Arvid Lindblad. As well as being this season's youngest driver, he's also the only F1 novice.
However, in a sport often criticised for its lack of diversity, Lindblad's background is noteworthy too. Born in the UK to a Swedish father and British Indian mother, he's Britain's first F1 driver of Indian descent. It's a badge that he wears with pride, stating that he's "looking forward to bringing some different countries to the grid."
Lindblad's debut F1 race stems from an early fascination with motorsport. Karting at 5, he soared through the ranks, progressing to Italian Formula 4 by age 15. Following this, he graduated through Formula 3 and Formula 2 in consecutive years, becoming the youngest driver to win races in both divisions.
His talent's been nurtured by the Red Bull junior programme, which he signed to in 2021. In 2025, Red Bull also provided Lindblad with his first opportunity to get behind the wheel of a modern F1 car in TPC or Testing of Previous Car sessions.
Although TPC sessions give budding drivers hands-on experience, they didn't quite offer the preparation for his debut that drivers had in previous years. The new F1 season has introduced significant rule changes and heavily redesigned cars. Engines and chassis have been reconfigured, tyres are smaller, and the cars consume fully sustainable, carbon-neutral fuels.
But Lindblad took it in his stride. Starting 9th on the grid in a helmet bearing the British, Indian and Swedish flags, at one point he reached 3rd place, ahead of his hero Lewis Hamilton, ultimately finishing in 8th position. This made him the third-youngest driver ever to finish in the points of a grand prix.
