Cuba dances to a hip-hop beat

Young people in Cuba are dancing. They are dancing hip-hop.

Cuba is famous for salsa and rumba dancing. People in Cuba didn't know about hip-hop. They had no internet. The internet arrived in Cuba in 2015. Today, 4.2 million people can use the internet in Cuba.

The dance group 'Datway' are online. The group has16 dancers. They dance hip-hop. They put dance videos on Facebook and Instagram. They mix hip-hop dancing with Cuban dances.

Liuven Dopico is a member of Datway. The mix of dances is beautiful.

Liuven Dopico: "Here we mix hip-hop a lot, urban street dance, we mix it with traditional Cuban music. We combine all that and create something really beautiful."

Datway are dancing a new style of hip-hop. They are now famous all over the world.

Datway won $10,000 in a dance competition. This money helps the group a lot. In Cuba, most jobs pay $87 a month.

Ernesto Rodriguez is the leader of Datway. He bought a special camera. He gave money to all the dancers and children in the video.

Ernesto Rodriguez: "We are using technology. We bought a good camera for the group, and from that half of the money – of all that was left – I distributed it among all the members. I also gave money to the children who participated, the ones who passed by in the video, everybody."
