Billie Eilish champions the Grammys - 3rd February 2020
Teen singer Billie Eilish won awards across the board at the 2020 Grammy music awards. She was crowned queen of pop, receiving the top place in the most prized categories - including Best New Artist and Song of the Year.
At the age of 18, Billie Eilish replaces Taylor Swift as the youngest singer ever to win the award of Album of the Year with ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’. She recorded the album at her L.A. home with her brother Finneas O’Connell, who was also propelled to the top of his own category, Producer of the Year, for his work on his sister’s album.
Eilish was stunned when she received awards for the ‘big four’ categories, a feat last achieved in 1981. Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Album of the Year are top of any pop star’s wish list and Eilish swiped them all.
The young celebrity was humbled by her runaway success, saying she felt like an imposter rather than a superstar winner. She joked, "I feel like I'm not supposed to be here, I feel like they accidentally let in a fan!"
However, her fame has been rightly recognised - over the last 12 months she has diverted the path of pop from typical melodies to experimental rhythms. By writing lyrics and singing songs about dark questions rather than romance, Eilish has attracted worldwide fans, which has boosted her music up the downloads list.
Aside from the on-stage action, there was also some excitement offstage during the glitzy show due to several cases of mistaken identity in the audience. ‘Seat fillers’ are people used to sit in empty seats at awards ceremonies. One businessman, who was seat filling for the fourth time at the Grammys, was mistaken for Eilish’s grandfather as he jumped up enthusiastically each time her name was announced.
