Concrete jungle threatens mangroves on Pakistan island

This island, called Bundle Island, is not far from Karachi, Pakistan’s most populated city.

The island has no human residents. It’s home to camels, fish and the wildlife of its mangrove forests.

Architect and city planner, Arif Belgaumi, believes the island protects Karachi from destructive storms.

Belgaumi: "These islands form a barrier against storm surges and tsunamis. And their preservation is vital for the preservation of Karachi"

However, the Prime Minister, Imran Khan, is supporting major construction on the island. The $50 billion project would provide Karachi with additional housing.

Khan recognises the threat of climate change and has supported renewable energy. However, if this development goes ahead, it is expected to create thousands of jobs. This would provide Pakistan with much needed tax revenue.

Others have warned against destroying the mangroves. Without them, Karachi will experience serious problems.

Omar: "It's the mangroves that protect us from these storms and cyclones. And the ecosystem here is essential for the livelihood of the fishermen who come here.
