2023 winning and losing - 29th December 2023 Alles anzeigen

Around the world, life was getting better as people found creative ways to solve problems.

In Denmark, police officers are now online playing video games. They’re trying to create a safe online space and protect young people from cybercriminals.

Sisse Birkebaek: "When we tell them about what our main target is, is just to be present and try to, to make it a safer place in the internet, especially for, for youngsters, then they are actually quite happy about it, especially the parents."

Women continued to break records in sports. In Australia, Spain won the 2023 Women's Football World Cup for the first time. They played against England who lost 1-0. London student Jolie Hill’s proud of the women’s achievements.

Jolie Hill: "The fact that like 50-60 years ago, we weren't even allowed to play football in this country, and now we're here in the final of the Women's World Cup... I'm so proud of them. Like, genuinely, it, it does bring a tear to my eye."

Indian scientists landed a spaceship on the moon. It became the first country to go to the moon's south pole. This makes India the fourth country to reach the moon. It also opens more opportunities for space research.

P Veeramuthuvel: "The entire mission operations, right from launch till landing, happened flawlessly as per the timeline. And, we became the fourth country to land, to demonstrate the soft landing onto the moon's surface and we became the first country to go to the near to the south pole of the moon."

But back on Earth, some deaf people attended a classical music concert in New York. A company called Music: Not Impossible has created equipment they can wear to feel the music. The device can translate music into vibrations on the skin in real time. Now, everyone wants to wear it.

Flavia Naslausky: "As you know already, this was designed with and inspired by the deaf community. And along this journey, though, we realised that everybody wants to use it. This is about shared connections, shared experiences, bringing people together that otherwise wouldn't be together."

There were similar achievements in the world of video games. Sony developed a new Playstation controller. Playing video games is now easier for people with disabilities. This gamer, who has one hand, can now play after 15 years.

Melanie Eilert: "I can only play with my right hand. So the number of inputs I can do is limited.

Interviewer: And so how does this change your whole gaming experience?

Melanie Eilert: “So, with the external buttons I can attach, the number of buttons I can use increases."

But with all the achievements and improvements, Earth continues to remind us of the dangers of climate change. So as the year ended, governments met in Dubai to make plans to deal with the climate crisis. But while politicians talked in Dubai, the Inuit community is losing their Arctic home to rising temperatures.

Erling Rasmussen: "But it's melting so maybe in a few years it's gone. It can be a problem. So I think in the future the city will have to get its drinking water from the ocean." Weniger anzeigen
