Climate protests for COP26

The COP26 climate conference has been on for a week. Tens of thousands of people including environmentalists protested in Glasgow.

They think governments failed the United Nations climate plans. They want governments to act faster to stop global warming.

For Greta Thunberg, who is a climate activist, leaders at COP26 are only making speeches but won't take action.

Greta Thunberg: "The COP has turned into a PR event, where leaders are giving beautiful speeches and announcing fancy commitments and targets while behind the curtains, the governments of the global north countries are still refusing to take any drastic climate action. This is no longer a climate conference. This is now a global north greenwash festival. A two-week-long celebration of business as usual and blah blah blah."

Protests are happening around the world but Glasgow is the main one. Protesters want governments to act faster.

Alex Jones worries about the future for children.

Alex Jones: "Obviously, I'm here with my kids, and it's going to be their inheritance, long after I'm gone. It's going to be them to deal with the fallout of the decisions that get made at the moment, so for their sake it's really important."

Jayne Whitehead thinks that governments must pass new laws now. They must stop putting carbon in the air.

Jayne Whitehead: "So, individuals can't do that themselves, world leaders need to change the systems radically, so that we are cutting from now and not in the future, but immediately."

Protesters want governments to stop using fossil fuels. They also want to help groups that are already suffering from climate change.

Jenny Rise thinks that leaders are scared of the protests.
